First Day of Lent

February 9, 2005 – 11:16 pm

Today being the first day of Lent means that it was also my first day without meat. I have, though, allowed myself to include fish in my diet for the duration of Lent. For lunch, I had a “farmer’s market” pizza from the cafeteria on campus, and it was actually quite good. Zucchini, eggplant, mushrooms, red onions, bell peppers…all the fixings. For dinner, Ariele and I made black bean burritos, which also turned out very well. Day one…no problem. But, we’ll see what I’ll be saying three weeks from now.

  2. A piece of good news for you, though Ariel may not agree: apparently, giving things up for Lent does NOT include Sundays — and in fact, if you count forty days back from Easter, to get to Ash Wednesday, you need to leave out the Sundays. So, barbecue, 1pm, Sunday?

  3. I think one of you guys brought this up a little while back, and that was the first time I had heard of this. And, after doing a brief Internet search, all indications are that you are indeed correct. I have to admit, though, that it will be hard to break my traditional commitment of “fasting” from Ash Wednesday through the Saturday before Easter. I’ll have to ponder on that.
