A Response to “Will Microsoft Kill Linux?”
February 27, 2005 – 4:31 pmIf you read Slashdot, you may have noticed that an author on LinuxWorld has published a response to the article I was describing here. The author of the response does a much more thorough job debunking the claims of the original article than I did. I am glad, though, that someone of this level of familiarity with hardware support in Linux was able to respond as thoroughly as he or she did. I am also glad to know that I was not the only one that so emphatically dismissed the claims of the seemingly reputable author of the original article.

There should be room in the world for both systems

And I think it has been shown empirically that there has been room for both Windows and Linux (and, I do agree, there _should_ be room for both). The rebuttal of the original article was meant to show people that Microsoft cannot easily kill Linux, even though many people wish that were the case. Supporters of Linux want people who use computers to know that people _can_ choose what operating system they use; that decision is not dictated to them. Too many people don’t know you can use a computer without using Windows. That’s a shame. Don’t get me wrong; it’s not about wanting people to _prefer_ Linux (though that would be nice). It’s about wanting people to know Linux is out there. It’s a choice. If you prefer to use Windows, it is your unequivocal right to do so. The same is true for those who prefer to use Linux. It’s just a shame that so many people don’t know there’s a choice to be made.
