The New Blog Has Gone Live
March 30, 2005 – 12:23 pmI have successfully transitioned my old blog from Blogger to my own personal server. MySQL and PHP are providing the braun; WordPress is providing the beauty. Okay, that’s not entirely accurate. WordPress does more than beautify the blog. In fact, I might be more impressed with WordPress than any other single piece of application software I have seen. It renders beautifully in my web browser, and the attention to detail paid by the developers is quite commendable.
Please bear with me as I tweak the site to get things working the way I would like them to work. Some changes will be very subtle; others not so much. Feel free to let me know if you see anything that needs fixing. The template that I have adapted was written by a German speaker, and as a result I have had to translate some button text and such to English. I have probably not found everything that needs translating yet.
Because the page is hosted on my own server (which is, itself, not a dedicated server), the blog may be down at some point when you try to visit. Don’t worry. I hope to keep the web server running as often as possible, but upgrades and such will cause occasional down time.
Oh, and I almost forgot to say that the picture at the top of the page is one of the pictures I took when Ariele and I went up to the top of Mount Wilson recently.
Comments are always welcome. Enjoy!

Looks good Jeff! Congrats on your newfound state of independence. Is dirichlet serving the site?
By Kristján on Mar 30, 2005 at 12:51 pm
Thanks! Yes, dirichlet is serving the site. I have a couple of misgivings about it, but I’ll keep my eye on it as time passes. Arranging for a dedicated server at this point just doesn’t seem worth the hassle, and it is kind of nice to have physical access to the server at a moment’s notice.
We’ll see how it goes.

So, I’m looking at your site on MDA’s computer, and I personally think that your font could be a little bit darker. That, and your longer posts need an autocollapse feature. That’s all I can think of to say on the new design for now.

Jeffrey - your new format looks wonderful! I particularly like the photo at the top! Definitely not something we see from ‘the plains of Katy’!! We enjoy catching up with your daily happenings this way. Keep up the great work!

Thanks Mom! I’m glad you enjoy it. I have a lot of fun with it.
Thanks Adam for the constructive criticisms. I’ll soon be combing through the WordPress plugins to fill in a few holes I’ve found, and the comments are definitely one such hole.

Let me be the first next to congratulate you on the new site! Looking very nice indeed! And I look forward to yet another friend I can discuss the inner workings of Wordpress with! For example, the second of Adam’s quibbles can be solved with the “More” button on the post-writing page.

I am enjoying your new format, particularly the picture at the top. Maybe you could occasionally change picture to give us “flatlanders” another view of your beautiuful California. Being born there I still consider it my home state.Proud of you, hang in there.

Thanks Papa! I definitely intend to keep the page in mind when I’m out shooting pictures. In fact, I wouldn’t mind at all heading back up to Mount Wilson on a less cloudy day to get some pictures with more of the pretty blue sky in them. The observatory at Mount Wilson also opens up soon, so maybe I’ll get some better shots over there.

Mr. and Mrs. Jeff’s Parents, while CA may have some beautiful views, thinking of “flatlanders” and Katy reminds me of one of my favorite places around Houston (I went to Rice for undergrad). A friend of mine is from a little bit up 290 near Waller, and I always loved going out to her house on a sunny day. Being able to stand in her back yard and see an uninterrupted sky of pristine blue was almost a religious experience. In fact, I’d love to be able to go and sit in her back yard right now, mosquitoes and all, and take in the view. It’d be nice to see some countryside again that isn’t essentially a parched desert.

Can I share some resources with you?

I’m not sure what that means, but yes.
