Jury Duty Next Month
May 9, 2005 – 9:39 pmI received a jury summons in the mail today, and it looks like I’ll be heading to court the week of June 6. I registered over the phone tonight, and I’m supposed to call again the weekend prior to my service to find out a specific date and time for reporting.
I’m feeling equal parts curiosity and disappointment about this. I’ve never served on a jury before, though there is no guarantee I’ll be serving on a jury as a result of this summons either. I’m disappointed because that is the week after finals are due, and I was hoping to take that week to catch up on things that I will have been neglecting as the end of the term nears.
I suppose I could at least root for an interesting trial. I do live in LA, so this seems quite possible.

I’ve witnessed my dad being called for jury duty before. It’s quite entertaining:
Dad: “Hello?”
Other Person: “Hello, I’m calling to notify you that you’ve been summoned for jury duty.”
Dad: “What’s that?”
Other Person: “You’ve been summoned for jury duty.”
Dad: “I’m sorry, you’ll have to speak up. I have trouble with my hearing.”
Other Person: “Thank you. You no longer have jury duty.”
(And yes, my dad *is* hard of hearing. He’s not just doing it to get out of going.)

Haha! I like that story. I’m very interested, to be honest, to see the diversity of the people pooled for this particular task. I would imagine the selection criteria is about as random as you could realistically make it (it obviously excludes transients, non-citizens, those with specific disabilities, etc.).

You don’t want too interesting a trial, though. Think OJ or Michael Jackson. It’d take forever
But I’m interested to hear what happens. I’ve never served before. Could even be fun.

That’s the truth. I thought the other night about what would happen if I got on some really high profile trial, and when the trial wrapped up there were book deals and movie deals and such waiting on the table for me.
But, for the rest of my life, I’d be the guy who served on that jury in that trial. That wouldn’t be so cool.
