The Camry Is Going Hybrid

May 17, 2005 – 11:50 am

According to this article, Toyota has decided to make a hybrid version of the Camry, the number one selling car in the United States. Another interesting tidbit? The hybrid will be built at Toyota’s manufacturing facility in Georgetown, Kentucky.

Buying a Toyota, or Honda, or almost any foreign car has almost always been seen as sending your dollars (and hence future jobs) oversees. This is just another example that the global economy is not quite so cut and dried.

  2. For consistency, people that refuse to buy foreign cars should stop shopping at Wal-Mart, or any general-goods retail store for that matter.

I guess a car makes more of a statement, due to its visibility. All the more power to Ford et al.

Jeff you’re right; bying a car originally from this-or-that country, no longer means sending your money to that country. This goes both for the place of manufacture, as well as the actual stock ownership. As an example, GM (if I remember correctly) owns Volvo, Rover and some others. Chrysler American? I think the company’s name is Daimler-Chrysler (notice Daimler being first) - Mercedes-Benz and Chrysler are equally American, it seems.

  3. I own a 92 Camry with 242,000 miles on it and a ‘92 Accord with 170,000. Just put in a new (used) engine in the Camry after it imploded due to what I think was a mechanic mistiming the engine. Other than that, these both have been a dream and the car industry truly is global.

  4. Yeah, I agree with Kristian. Back in the 80’s the argument actually made a little bit of sense about “buying American” (at least in the sense that you actually could) but now a days hardly anything is made or even grown here. We buy our flouwers from Chile our vegetables from Mexico, our textiles from China, etc, etc. There’s no getting around it any more, you have to buy foreign and not that there’s anything wrong with that. How sustainable this is only time will tell.
