Is This Man “Deep Throat”?
May 31, 2005 – 10:09 amAccording to this news story, W. Mark Felt, second in command at the FBI in the early 1970s, has claimed in an article published by Vanity Fair that he was “Deep Throat”, the informant for Washington Post columnist Bob Woodward during the Watergate scandal.
I remember reading articles similar to this one a couple of years ago about a class project in which a group of students at Illinois tried to guess who “Deep Throat” was after pouring through thousands of pages of documents and hours of audio tape. They first guessed that it was Pat Buchanan (yes, that Pat Buchanan, who was a speech writer for President Nixon), but later revised their guess to Fred Fielding (a deputy assistant to Nixon). If the information published in Vanity Fair is correct, and W. Mark Felt is indeed “Deep Throat”, then the students were not only incorrect in their guess, but their list of seven finalists doesn’t even include the right person. Whoops.

It appears as though Bob Woodward has confirmed that Mr. Felt was indeed “Deep Throat”. Pretty interesting stuff.

Rating war between the morning shows are pretty intense these days. It is pretty interesting of which channel decides to make a big deal out of this. NBC only mentions this for like 15 seconds from Ann Curry (ew) from the news desk. However, ABC was doing a full coverage on it.
They interviewed Felt’s lawyer. Apparently, Felt felt that he was a traitor to the Nixon administration and that is why he intended to not his identity known to the public until he dies. Recently, his family convinces him that what he did was an honorable thing and he should let the public know the truth. If I hear correctly on the TV this morning, not even a lot of his close family members know that he is Deep Throat! Can you imagine carrying that big of a secret for that many years? I certainly cannot. Maybe that is why I am not FBI/CIA… haha
