My First Earthquake
June 16, 2005 – 3:27 pmFinally. I’ve been in California for two years now, and just this afternoon I felt my first earthquake. According to this data from the US Geological Survey, the quake was of magnitude 5.3 and struck about 70 miles east of here at 20:53:25 UTC (or 1:53 PM PDT).
I was sitting in the lab when it happened. I was typing on the computer, and I heard the rumbling following by an immediate shuffling of the wheels of my chair on the floor mat the chair rolls on. Some items on the book shelves in the lab shook very briefly, and the whole thing was over.
Mike chronicled the details, as he was coming down the stairs leading to my lab as the quake struck. Greg’s description is priceless. Good times.
