Weather in Texas
June 29, 2005 – 11:49 amWhen I first showed up in California in September of 2003, I started to take note of the similarities and differences between California and my old home of 22+ years, Texas. The food is reasonably similar (the Tex-Mex and traditional Californian cuisine being the two big differences), and I surmised that the weather was pretty similar. The politics and the geography were the two big differences I immediately noticed.
And now that I am making a brief trip back through Texas, I realize the weather similarity is bogus. Both places have reasonably mild winters, but the summers in Texas are killers relative to the Californian summers. I just checked weather.com right now, and it tells me it is 79 degrees (F) in Pasadena, CA, and 94 degrees in Houston, TX. Those 15 degrees make one hell of a difference. Add in the humidity, and you get at least one guy looking forward to spending the rest of the summer in Pasadena.

Let’s see… differences between Southern CA and Southern TX:
Food:
1) TX has BBQ, Tex-Mex; CA doesn’t
2) CA has “Californian” cuisine
Weather:
1) TX has weather; CA doesn’t
Clarification:
Summer in Texas is longer, hotter, and more humid than it is in SoCal. Winter is colder in Texas, and Fall and Spring are nearly nonexistant in Texas, or at least in Houston. The Houston area also gets *lots* of rain, often in the form of thunderstorms, which I *really* miss. What we had here in CA this year was a fluke. I wouldn’t be surprised if we don’t see a single drop of rain this coming “rainy” season. SoCal generally has months-long strings of nice weather, whereas the nice days in Houston are much more precious because of their scarcity.
Geography:
Houston: Flat and swampy
Austin: Rolling Hills
SoCal: Mountains and valleys
Natural Disasters:
Texas: Hurricanes, Tornadoes, Fires
SoCal: Earthquakes, Fires
In all honesty, I rather miss Houston, even the heat, humidity, and rain. Pretty much the only thing I don’t miss are the mosquitoes with 6 foot wingspans.
Have a good trip Jeff. Eat some good BBQ and Tex-Mex and drink some Shiner for me.
