Met Ole Duke
June 30, 2005 – 3:06 pmAlmost every time I make it back to Texas from California, I meet up with friends of mine who are in town to head up to Duke’s Tavern, which I found out last night is the oldest bar in the suburb in which my parents live. Last night, I ended up going to Duke’s with Bobby, Nick, Tade, MC, John, and Michael. And each and every one of us got to shake hands with Duke himself.
Duke’s is a classic bar for many reasons, not the least of which is the shuffleboard table stationed near the pool table in the back of the place. Every time we head to Duke’s, we get at least a couple of games in. John and I took on Nick and MC last night, and I believe the game count is 2-0 in favor of John and myself. We played to 15 but won 13-11 the first game because time ran out. We decided to rematch, and this time we won hands down 15-12 (I think it was 12, maybe not).
Not to toot my own horn here (well, yes, it really is to toot my own horn), but I pulled John and I out of the abyss in that second game with a 7 point turn to make the score 11-9, us. It was a formality after that. Shuffleboard…like riding a bicycle, baby.
