Las Vegas Quote of the Weekend
August 23, 2005 – 9:07 pmThis past weekend I traveled to Las Vegas with six of my close friends, guys I met in junior high school and have hung out with ever since. We were having a joint bachelor party for Bobby (who got married in early July) and Michael (who will get married in early September). Lots of poker, story-telling, and general tomfoolery commenced, as one would expect.
The quote of the weekend, however, came from a third party. At one point, I was playing at a poker table with eight people I had never met, and I happened to be sitting between two guys who obviously knew each other well and had come to Vegas together. The guy to my right asks the guy to my left, “How much you down?” The guy on my left, shaking his head and furrowing his brow, “Shit.” “Man, how much you down?” “I don’t know.” “One hundred?” The guy on my left chuckles quickly to himself and just shakes his head. “Five hundred?” “No, not that much.” The guy on my right finishes off the conversation with a classic, “Shit, man, if I go to Vegas and lose less than five hundred dollars, I feel like I won.”
Wow. Any semblance of a poker face I had for that hand was gone. I just laughed and folded my hand, and the guy to my right says, “See, this guy knows what I’m talking about.” For the record, I lost money, but nowhere near $500. It’s just interesting to see where some people set their cutoffs when they go.

Who said I was on the low side of $500? You don’t believe I have thousands to throw away at poker tables across Vegas? Yeah, neither do I.

My limit is usually $100. That goes both ways, if I’m up $100 I stop too. No need to be greedy.
