When Choices Don’t Matter
August 28, 2005 – 9:22 pmAriele and I were doing some shopping at the Santa Anita Mall on Saturday, and for lunch, I decided to take a quick spin through Sbarro for lunch. Sbarro is a fast food Italian place, and they are somewhat well known for their huge slices of pizza. I purchased a couple slices of pizza, a side salad, and a drink to complete some sort of meal deal. When I told the girl at the cash register I would like a drink, she asks, “What size? Small, medium, or large?” I ask, “Are there free refills?” “Yes.” “Okay, then I’ll have a small.” She replies, “But the meal comes with a medium.”
Well, great. If the meal comes with a medium, I suppose I’ll take a medium then. But, if it comes with a medium, why ask if I would prefer a small? It’s akin to those stories you hear where someone orders a salad and is asked what dressing they’d prefer, Italian or ranch. “Oh, I’ll take ranch.” “Sorry, we’re out of ranch.” Hmm…if it’s not an option, how about we remove it from the list of choices?
