Hook ‘em Horns!
September 11, 2005 – 1:28 amI was able to watch one of the best college football games I have ever seen tonight, as my beloved number two ranked Texas Longhorns defeated the number four ranked Ohio State Buckeyes at the Horseshoe Stadium in Columbus, Ohio.
Last season, the Longhorns earned a trip to the Rose Bowl (here in Pasadena), and my best friend Bobby was able to come out and go to the game with me. We stood and cheered as our Longhorns stayed competitive early, began to fade in the middle and later parts of the game, and then roared back to take the victory at the end. That feeling was experienced all over again tonight as the Horns grabbed the lead early, got pushed around in the middle and later stages of the game, and then clinched the win in the final minutes.
Vince Young, the Longhorns’ starting quarterback, basically pulled the team to victory in both games. In the Rose Bowl, he ran between, around, and over the Michigan defensive line and linebacking corps to the tune of four touchdowns. Tonight, he passed over the top into Ohio State’s secondary where he found mostly single coverage on the Longhorns’ receivers. Very rarely in college football does a quarterback dictate what defense the opponent must play, but with Vince Young, if a defense does not stack extra bodies in the box, he will run for ridiculous amounts of yardage. He basically dictates that Longhorn receivers are going to see single coverage a vast majority of the time, and he simply has to hit them when they break open.
Much easier said than done. Fortunately tonight, Young found Limus Sweed in the corner of the end zone for the winning score with time ticking down. Our defense put a nice exclamation point at the end with a safety to close the game out. Our march to the championship game continues. The next foe: Rice. Let’s keep this train moving. Hook ‘em!

Rice is a “foe”?!?! Check out today’s Rice vs. UCLA score! It’s been about a decade since we beat you guys. Although, I do have to say that we often give you a run for your money, at least during the first half. I think it’s a psychological thing.
“Foe”. Ha!

And what’s with not mentioning that your friend Adam also went to the Rose Bowl with you and fought against the evil, anti-standing-up Michigan fans while cheering on Texas? (It’s okay for me to cheer for Texas as long as you’re not playing Rice). After all, I did save you a chunk of money by buying that ticket off of you.

That was Rice UCLA was playing? Funny. I was hanging out with UCLA kids last night, and got score updates without actually knowing who they were slaughtering.
Although my congratulations are more anti-OSU (sorry Bonnie) than pro-Texas, go Texas!

Well, Rice is a “foe” for a few reasons, one of which you mentioned. They have played us tough a few times, mostly in the first half. And then we turn on the after burners. A whole game of that sort of lackadaisical play from the Horns could potentially be dangerous.
Another reason Rice is a “foe” is that we’re playing them the week after a huge win. We will definitely take next week’s game more lightly than the one we just played, and again, that is potentially dangerous.
And sorry for not mentioning that you came to the Rose Bowl last year with us. Having three bodies to battle against the anti-standing-up Michigan fans was much better than just two.

Thanks Jeff, a little recognition is all I ask.
