Tips When Near A Car Chase

October 7, 2005 – 11:25 pm

While waiting for The Tonight Show to come on this evening, I stumbled across live coverage of yet another Los Angeles-area car chase. As usual with such chases, the news anchor covering the chase tries to report continuously on the events. Dead air makes for bad television in these cases. It can be interesting to see how the anchor chooses to fill the time, though usually it comes down to frequent updates of the exits the car is passing on the freeway.

Tonight, the anchor decided to give some tips to drivers who find themselves on the freeway when a car chase like this comes passing by. The anchor explained that moving over toward the slow lane is probably your best bet. He also recommended not trying to interfere with the chase, even if you are trying to slow the car down or help out the police in some other fashion.

The anchor was explaining that there is much you don’t know in these cases. For instance, he said you don’t know if there is a hostage in the car or if the driver has a weapon, both of which are good points. His next statement was a bit odd. “You also don’t know if there’s a body in the trunk.”

Somebody has been watching a little too much CSI.
