The Astros Are In The World Series
October 19, 2005 – 10:48 pmWhat a huge sigh of relief I experienced tonight when the Houston Astros won game six of the National League Championship Series against the St. Louis Cardinals. I have heard over the past two days from several people (my dad and my brother included) that I might have been a little too harsh on the Astros in my last blog post. Tonight, it looks as though they were right.
When the Astros lost game five on Monday night on an Albert Pujols home run in the top of the ninth inning with two outs, I was stunned. Shattered, even. I could have cried. I already had daydreams of World Series games being played in Houston, and Mr. Pujols put those dreams to bed very quickly. I was convinced the psychological blow alone was enough to propel the Cardinals to a game seven, where a notoriously tight Astros team would fail to do enough to win.
It is amazing how one dominant pitching performance can change all of that. And now, I get to spend a day or two thinking about the significance of World Series games being played in Houston. I have been going to Astros games with my dad for quite some time. I must have been six or seven years old when I went to my first game. I vividly remember sitting in the Astrodome, watching the Stros in their rainbow uniforms, staring around in wonder at just how huge the dome actually was. I remember watching Billy Hatcher, Glenn Davis, Jose Cruz, Billy Doran, Terry Puhl, Alan Ashby, and all the other guys trot into and out of the dugout at each inning change. What a feeling it must be for some of them to know the Stros will finally be playing in the World Series.
I am also very excited for my dad. Over forty years of rooting hard for the Astros has left him quite anxious to see the Stros in the World Series. In fact, it looks like he will get to go to at least one of the games being played in Houston. Live it up Dad.

Go ‘Stros! It’s about time! If only it had happened when I was at Rice…
