My World Series Prediction
October 22, 2005 – 4:33 pmHere it is, shortly before the first pitch of game one of the World Series. I now feel compelled to make my pick. It looks like anyone who is anyone is picking the White Sox, while at the same time declaring their intention of going against the “trendy” pick of the Astros. I’m not exactly sure who these trend setters are, if everyone who writes a column is picking the White Sox.
Anyway, here I am, defender of the trendy pick, picking the Astros in six. I think the White Sox are being given credit for the serious flaws of their playoff opponents thus far. The Boston Red Sox and Los Angeles Angels did not have much starting pitching to speak of when they played the White Sox. The Red Sox never had dependable starting pitching this season, and the Angels were exhausted after their five game series with the Yankees and with the loss of their ace, Bartolo Colon. Most teams would have folded to a well-rested White Sox team under similar situations.
The Astros are healthy, and they have the starting pitching the other two opponents of the White Sox didn’t. I like the way the Stros play at Minute Maid, their home park. I see the Stros taking one of the first two in Chicago, two of three in Houston, and game six in Chicago. If our hitters can just keep getting on base and getting opportune hits every now and again, the Stros can put the pressure on the White Sox pitching staff that they have not yet felt.
Regardless, I’m looking forward to the World Series with two participants who don’t get there very often. Play ball!

I’m keeping my fingers crossed for Tuesday’s game three. I’ll know tomorrow morning at some point. That sure would be a lot of fun.

Almost. Close, though. Well, not exactly. Still, somewhat close.
