Lots of People Selling Stuff Online

November 28, 2005 – 11:09 pm

One in six Americans have at some point tried to sell a good online, reports InformationWeek. I find these numbers very surprising. Amanda Lenhart disagrees:

“I’d say these numbers were only moderately surprising,” said Amanda Lenhart, the senior research specialist at Pew Internet who co-authored the survey.

One in six Americans. Wow. Not all of us have access to computers. Not all of us who have access to computers are Internet savvy enough to be able to initiate an auction. Not all of us who have access to computers and are Internet savvy enough to be able to initiate an auction feel comfortable initiating said auction. How have that many people tried to sell something online?

  2. The title of the article is terrible; it mislead me for a good while. The text of the article, though, says that it’s only 17% of the people who already “go online”. The original report confirms that qualification.

    I’m still very impressed, though.

  3. Ah, that makes a ton more sense. My critical reading skills are obviously not what they once were.

I can sleep better at night now.
