Day One in Massachusetts

December 15, 2005 – 8:15 pm

Ariele and I took a red eye flight late Wednesday night to Boston, Massachusetts. I am staying with Ariele and her family for a week, and then I will head to Texas to visit my family for another week. Two full weeks of vacation; I’m excited.

We arrived in Boston around 6:30am local time on Thursday morning. Ariele’s mom was waiting for us at the airport. She saw that I was wearing my heavy coat. I also had a hat and gloves easily accessible in my bag. She said that as she was entering the parking garage, she saw that the temperature outside was eight degrees (Fahrenheit). Eight degrees! I can count the number of times I’ve seen eight degrees on one hand.

And there was snow on the ground. Tons of it. Well, when I mentioned I thought there was tons of snow on the ground, I was informed that what I was seeing was actually a little amount of snow. Just enough to cover the ground and have a little bit of depth. But when you’ve spent the first twenty four years of your life between Texas and California, seeing enough snow to cover all visible horizontal surfaces is seeing tons of snow.

Add on to my adjustment the fact that there is a winter storm of some non-negligible strength arriving this very evening around midnight, and the weather has become very interesting. There should be fresh snow on the ground when I wake up in the morning. Or, more accurately, when I get woken up in the morning.

Now this is a white Christmas.
