Some Bowl Thoughts

January 2, 2006 – 10:58 pm

Two games remain in college football’s bowl season. With many games in the books, fans have been treated to some great action. From the crazy Cal-Stanford-like ending to Michigan-Nebraska to Alabama’s fearsomely ugly last second field goal, the action has generally not disappointed.

One thought that comes to my mind is how decently the Big 12 has done in the bowl season. Kansas dominated Houston, the fourteenth ranked offense in the country, by a score of 42-13. Oklahoma beat Oregon, the number six ranked team in the country and a team that complained about not being invited to a bigger bowl game. Alabama, a team that was undefeated and in the national championship picture well into mid-season, squeaked out a win over Texas Tech. Overall I like how the conference has performed, especially given the grief it has taken for being so weak this season.

Another thought I have is, how classless is Virginia Tech quarterback Marcus Vick? Vick served a year long suspension last season for underage drinking, and at the end of a play in today’s Gator Bowl, he stomped on a Louisville defender, driving his cleats into the guy’s calf. How despicable is that?

What a call by West Virginia at the end of tonight’s Sugar Bowl. It was fourth down and six yards to go with a little less than two minutes remaining in the game, and West Virginia executed one of the better fake punts a college football fan will see. The Mountaineers were up by three points at the time. The fake punt resulted in a first down, and West Virginia was able to run out the clock for the win. Kudos to Pete Fiutak of College Football News for calling the play before it happened in his Stream of Consciousness Notes from the game. Nicely played.

And one last thing. Why is Texas even bothering to show up and play in the Rose Bowl? If they are taking seriously what all the talking heads across the country are saying, this Wednesday night will be a huge waste of time and money for them. They will lose by fifteen touchdowns to the greatest team of football players assembled at any level on the face of God’s green Earth. Bobby pointed me to this piece related to my rant which I found very amusing.

And a belated Happy New Year to everyone out there.

  2. Still wonder why Texas bothered to show up at the Rose Bowl?

  3. Not at all, my good man. And just for the record, the “And one last thing…” paragraph in the above post was sarcastic, as should be seen after reading the article to which I linked.

I had a feeling the game would go the way it did. I had predicted 44-41 Texas. I was a combined 6 points off. Go Horns!
