Good Reasons To Vote Against Alito
January 30, 2006 – 10:33 amI was reading a New York Times article about Judge Alito’s likely confirmation, and it turns out at least one Republican senator will be voting against Judge Alito. This senator’s name is Lincoln Chafee, and he is from Rhode Island.
Senator Chafee’s explanation for why he is voting against Judge Alito is the most succinct and intelligible I have heard yet:
“I am a pro-choice, pro-environment, pro-Bill of Rights Republican, and I will be voting against this nomination.”
That’s just a great way to put it. If you value a woman’s right to choose, the protection of the environment, or basic liberties granted by the Bill of Rights, Judge Alito is a very scary Supreme Court justice indeed. Not to mention if you like the idea of having a system of checks and balances in our government. Freedom in this country has seen better days.

It’s odd to me that the Senate (half of the legislative branch) felt it was appropriate to confirm without a fight a judicial branch guy who believes in unchecked power for the executive branch.
But maybe I just don’t understand it completely. I mean, the Republicans were talking about nixing the filibuster ’cause it might be a bad thing, maybe they got togther one night over martinis and decided checks and balances were a bad thing too.
No, I’m not bitter.

The Senate had enough in them to beat back the woefully unqualified Harriet Miers nomination, but when they were presented someone who actually had a resume, they rolled right over.
Party loyalty is a complex political phenomena, that’s for sure.
