When The Republicans Police Themselves
February 1, 2006 – 12:58 pmTimes are tough for the Republican party. The Jack Abramoff scandal is exposing more Republican corruption as the days go by. The American public is losing confidence in Republican elected officials and, more importantly, is growing distrustful of what these officials have to say. The party needs to fight back, and fight back with a vengeance.
Republicans are getting serious about showing the public that future indiscretions will not be tolerated under any circumstance. The first line of action? Banning lobbyists from the gym.
That’s right. The House of Representatives is voting today to keep lobbyists out of the House gym. How much honor and integrity could our elected officials, nay our whole elected body of government, have retained if Jack Abramoff and Tom Delay had not met after taking turns on the ab-ball that one day? I suppose we will never know. But we will not allow this to happen again!

Jeff, I think you’re being sarcastic, but isn’t this a good thing? Sure, it won’t end corruption in one fell swoop, but do you expect them to throw the lobbyists out of DC in one day? Maybe it’s too little too late, but better that than nothing at all.
Besides, maybe more shady deals go on in the gym than we know about.

It is certainly a good thing, yes. Anything to help turn back the rampant corruption among the Republican party in Washington is a good thing.
But, I am going to keep a close eye on this piecemeal approach to ethics reform. It is easy to throw the public a few small bones without ever getting to the truly substantive issues.
