Florida Dominates NCAA Tournament

April 3, 2006 – 9:28 pm

The University of Florida beat UCLA tonight 73-57 to win the men’s college basketball national championship. Here are Florida’s other opponents during the tournament and the final score in each game:

(11) George Mason 73-58
(1) Villanova 75-62
(7) Georgetown 57-53
(11) Wisconsin-Milwaukee 82-60
(14) South Alabama 76-50

Besides the relatively close call against Georgetown, Florida flat out dominated their opponents. And Villanova was a very popular pick to win the NCAA tournament before it all began. It’s not like Florida caught a break here or there, ran into a team with injuries, or needed a desperation three pointer to win any of these games. All but one were undeniable routs.

An interesting bit of trivia is that the NCAA champions (Florida) and the NIT champions (South Carolina) played in the SEC championship game on Sunday, March 11. Florida nipped South Carolina by 2 points, 49-47. It’s amusing to think that the NIT champions put up a better fight against Florida than any of their NCAA tournament opponents.

Congratulations Gators! It’s an exciting time for you folks.

  2. As much as I hate everything to do with the Gators, I was glad to see them manhandle UCLA. I don’t know why, but I’ve developed a bit of a dislike for not just UCLA, but California schools in general (UC Berkeley, USC).

I think it’s interesting that we very nearly had a LSU/Florida championship. It would have been great to see two SEC teams fighting it out (and, LSU winning eventually). How often is the NCAA championship in the hands of just one conference? It’s a shame that will never happen in football.
