Does Moussaoui Deserve To Die?
April 17, 2006 – 2:58 pmThe defense attornies for Zacarias Moussaoui, the convicted co-conspirator of the the terrorists who participated in the September 11 attacks, have called a behavioral specialist as a witness to make the case that Moussaoi’s life should be spared. Jurors will soon decide whether he should spend the rest of his life in prison or face the death penalty.
The title for this BBC article is “Moussaoui ‘came from broken home’ “. Boo hoo. That’s the reason his life should be spared? Because his family life sucked when he was a kid?
In all seriousness, why don’t we just lock him up and throw away the key? I’m not looking for a death penalty debate here, but I think it would be worse punishment for this guy to be locked in a small cell for the rest of his life eating crappy food and having no communication with the outside world.
No phone calls. No letters. No Internet. No visitors. No gym time. No outdoor time. No books. Nothing. Just sitting in a cell, all day long, day after day, eating and drinking the same thing every day (a few slices of bread, a bowl of rice, and a couple of cups of water would do). Throw a toilet in his cell, give him fresh clothes once a month, and you’re done.

In the absence of external circumstances, yes, he should die. However, given that killing him would make him a martyr, I agree with you Jeff. Lock him up and give him the bare minimum of what is necessary to survive. Don’t kill him, but otherwise make it as if he doesn’t exist. I’m also reminded of one of my favorite lines from The Lord of the Rings: “Do not be too quick to deal out death and judgement, for even the very wise cannot see all ends.”
