Happy National High Five Day

April 20, 2006 – 1:54 pm

That’s right, today is National High Five Day. This holiday has a long and storied history, starting all the way back in 2002 at the University of Virginia.

I told a few people in my lab about it, and one of them (Jen) said, “Oh yeah, I think I’ve heard of that.” Immediately I think, “How in the hell would she have heard of that?” And then of course it struck me…she went to the University of Virginia and was a student during the inaugural National High Five Day.

This day reminds me of International Suit Day, a formally recognized day that my friends and I invented in high school. As you can see, we kicked it up a notch, making the thing International. I mean, what says ‘international’ more than five middle-class white high school dudes in a Texas suburb? I believe International Suit Day lasted just that one day, but in my heart, it will last forever.

A high five to you, good sir or madam.

  2. I seem to remember having one of those in High School too, Jeff. The “suit day” thing. But my favorite quirky holiday is Talk Like a Pirate Day (Sept. 19).

  3. But when is this suit day? May 28th was suggested here, but I’m not going to patronise any lame knock-off suit day. But for the real thing I might break out the ol’ smart gear.
