Make More Babies
May 18, 2006 – 11:00 amI am a little late on the scene here, but I just watched a clip of The Colbert Report where Stephen Colbert was making fun of Fox News commentator John Gibson for a thoroughly racist display Gibson made late last week. Here’s the clip:

Do your duty. Make more babies.
Half of the kids in this country under five years old are minorities. By far the greatest number are Hispanic. Know what that means? Twenty five years and the majority population is Hispanic.
Put it bluntly, we need more babies.
Ouch! It looks like the talking heads over at Fox News aren’t even trying to thinly veil their racism anymore. Now it’s just a straight up xenophobic call to arms.
In all seriousness though, is the Fox News audience so predominantly white that the network feels that comfortable having such overtly racist statements made on the air? By one of their own hosts? Maybe it is, but I would think there’s a significant enough Hispanic viewership that such statements would be stricken before the show. Obviously that’s not the case.

Not only is it racist, it puts women in a difficult place. This Fox thing reminded me of this which reports that apparently women are supposed to always behave as if they are pregnant, in case they actually are and don’t know about it yet. This, and finding out that it’s apparently my duty as a white woman to have babies so we don’t get taken over by the Evil Mexicans contribute to the growing suspicion that I am no more than a walking uterus in the government’s eyes. All this is coming perilously close to making my list of “Reasons why I’m Leaving the Country.”
The “me too” part of this comment is that I too am somewhat amazed that Fox is expressing opinions I previously only saw on crazy right-wing fringe blogs. Joy.
