Number One Versus Number Two

September 5, 2006 – 11:04 am

This past weekend was the season opener for most college football teams around the country. My Longhorns crushed North Texas 56-7. That results doesn’t mean too much, given that North Texas isn’t anywhere near the level of Texas, but it’s better than a close win or a (*gasp*) loss would have been.

This coming Saturday, Texas plays Ohio State in Austin. This game will be number one versus number two, with Ohio State holding the top position. Last week, it would have been number one versus number three, as Notre Dame held the number two spot. But the Longhorns jumped them after Notre Dame beat Georgia Tech 14-10.

The article I linked to above says that Notre Dame slipped from number two to number four in the Associated Press Poll, but they received eight first place votes. Eight first place votes? The Longhorns had seven. Southern California received three. Both Texas and SC looked much better in their season openers (granted, against lesser competition) than Notre Dame did.

And in the interest of full disclosure, I didn’t watch the Notre Dame game. I saw some highlights, and Bobby and Craig gave me some details since they watched the game. But from what I’ve seen and heard about that game, I’m not sure who these eight folks are who think that Notre Dame is a better football team right now than either Ohio State, Texas, or Southern California.

I suppose that’s the polling system for you.
