What’s Up With The Resignations?
October 2, 2006 – 8:43 pmWhy do so many of President Bush’s closest advisors offer their resignations? I suppose “so many” is misleading, being that only three come immediately to mind in terms of high profile advisors. But we already knew that Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld
had twice offered President Bush his resignation, former Chief of Staff Andy Card offered his own resignation (which was subsequently accepted), and now Secretary of Defense Condeleeza Rice admits that in the past she has offered President Bush her own resignation.
I think there’s a reason these high profile advisors are offering their resignations: things aren’t working. Period. The people in charge are beginning to understand that the people in charge don’t understand very much. Now, it certainly takes a fair bit of self criticism to realize that you might not be the right person for a given job, and while that is commendable, it is important to understand that lightning doesn’t strike three times. The president has surrounded himself with people who at one point or another have realized that things aren’t working. New people need to be in charge. New ideas need to be expressed and debated. The status quo isn’t working.
November 7 is the next chance the people get to make the changes the president is obviously so unwilling to make himself.
