Yesterday Was a Good Day for Sports

October 8, 2006 – 10:44 pm

The first bit of sports I enjoyed yesterday was the annual Texas-Oklahoma Red River Rivalry football game. Texas won that game my first year in school, and they proceeded to lose my last three years. And two more years after that. Last year, we ended our five year losing streak and walloped OU. This year we soundly beat them by a score of 28-10. Needless to say I’m happy.

Technically we’re still in the thick of things for the national championship, but I just don’t see us making it. We have looked shaky at times, both on offense and defense. I sort of hold my breath when the opponents sling one deep on us, remembering full well how Ohio State bruised and battered our secondary last month. We held our own against OU, though, so I’m anxious to see how we do against the rest of our Big 12 competition.

Yesterday I was able to celebrate another annual occasion: the Yankees getting eliminated from baseball’s postseason. It’s not realistic for the Yankees to miss the playoffs altogether, so I have to stick to rooting for their quick and painful demise once the playoffs begin. That may even be more fulfilling for me, because I get to see Alex Rodriguez’s stat line: 1-14. That’s right, he batted 1-14 against the Tigers. That pairs pretty nicely with his 1-15 against the Angels last year in the playoffs. Way to earn those twenty plus million dollars, my man.

Now we get to the League Championship Series. I really don’t dislike any of the teams remaining, except for maybe the Cardinals. Being an Astros fan will do that to you. Regardless, I would be perfectly fine seeing any of the four teams remaining win it all, and I would be particularly happy if the team that comes out of the American League wins it all.

Man do I hate the Yankees.

  2. Yesterday was not a good day for sports. Ireland lost 5-2 to Cyprus in a Euro Cup qualifier. As much as I hate the Yankees (and am smug about the fact that DETROIT of all teams knocked them out), international footie captures my heart faster and more securely.

If having the Yankees win the Series again would ensure an Irish qualification, I would accept the deal. Just sayin’.

  3. The Yankee collapse was sweet! I actually felt sorry for A-Rod though, something I hadn’t expected as I enjoyed every one of his strikeouts, groundouts, and flyouts thoroughly. Now that the Yankees have decided to keep Torre, it will be interesting to see if they trade A-Rod. I heard they may trade him to the Angels which would be ironic. Hope that doesn’t happen but I could see some good coming out of it.
