A Bold New Iraq Initiative

October 24, 2006 – 9:19 am

We have news from The Seattle Times this morning:

The Bush administration has dropped the phrase “stay the course” from discussions about Iraq amid a recent surge in violence and renewed calls in the U.S. for a different approach to the conflict.

Press Secretary Tony Snow feels that the phrase does not accurately describe the administration’s plan in Iraq:

“What you have is not ’stay the course’ but in fact a study in constant motion by the administration,” Snow said.

Right, “constant motion”. So how well is the administration’s “constant motion” working in Iraq?

With more than a week remaining, October’s death toll is already the highest for American troops since November 2005, according to Iraq Coalition Casualty Count, an independent web-site that keeps track of such figures.

I’m sure the family and friends of those who have lost their lives in Iraq this month are glad the administration clarified that we are not “staying the course”. Something much more dynamic is afoot. We should all relax.

  2. I belive (though I can’t find it now) that Bush in an interview denied ever claiming that they would “stay the course”. Nothing like further inventing history!

  3. President Bush addressed the nation on the night of April 13, 2004. In his address, he said:

“Look, this is hard work. It’s hard to advance freedom in a country that has been strangled by tyranny. And, yet, we must stay the course, because the end result is in our nation’s interest.”

  4. Yes, it’s quite beyond me how, in this age of electronic records of speeches, anyone can claim that they didn’t say something that they clearly did! And why people let them get away with it!
