John Spivack, It’s Go Time
November 20, 2006 – 9:05 amYesterday Ariele, Bert, Katie, and I went down to the Brentwood area to participate in the Annual Fall Harvest Run. Katie and I ran the 5k; Bert and Ariele ran the 10k. I think we would all classify yesterday as a huge success. We all seemed to have a lot of fun with it.
I had three goals going into the race, ranked in order of decreasing importance: 1) run the whole race without stopping, (2) finish in under 29 minutes, and (3) do not get beat by anyone aged 70 years or older. I did indeed run the whole thing without stopping (which should really stop being a goal at this point, since I know I can do it), and my official time for the race was 26 minutes and 46 seconds. Two out of three ain’t bad, right?
One 70 year old man beat me, and his name is John Spivack. You know what that means…it’s go time, Mr. Spivack. But not really, because Mr. Spivack destroyed me. His official time was 24 minutes and 38 seconds. Yes, he finished the race a full two minutes plus ahead of me. I would ask for a rematch, but this wasn’t a photo finish folks. I got the smack laid down on me, and I’m not exactly sure how long it will take me to close that time gap.
Regardless, the race was a huge success. Katie and I have never done better in terms of pacing ourselves than we did on Sunday. And with that success under our belts, we’re going to continue trying to increase our distance in preparation for a 10k in the coming few months. I’m not declaring my 5k career over, though, because I need to finish one of these things where I beat all the people over 70 years old.
