Deftones’ Beware
January 29, 2007 – 9:41 amI recently got the new Deftones album, Saturday Night Wrist, and I’ve just started listening to it heavily. The third track on the album is called “Beware”, and it’s one of the coolest songs I’ve heard in a long time. If you have $1, access to iTunes, and you like hard rock, I definitely recommend downloading that one.
The whole album is a blast, to be honest. To my knowledge “Hole in the Earth” is the only single to be released off the album. After having a chance to digest Saturday Night Wrist a bit, I found that a portion of ARTIST direct’s review echos my sentiments:
Ultimately, Saturday Night Wrist is satisfying, though it may take a few listens given all the changes in individual cuts that tend to blur together the first time or two through.
I also agree with the first sentence of Blogcritics Magazine’s review:
Saturday Night Wrist by the Deftones can officially lay claim to the title of “only CD that’s managed to leave me feeling bludgeoned and exhilarated in a long long time.”
The bludgeoning goes back to the ARTIST direct review about the pace changes throughout the album, sometimes even within a song, that takes a few listens to absorb. The first couple of passes through this album reminded me a lot of the first few listens I had of Finch’s album Say Hello To Sunshine. It takes a little while to get into it, to feel like you can move with the music, but once you get it…it’s really, really good.

So, would you say this album is more like White Pony or Deftones? I liked the former, never really got into the latter.

I haven’t listened to enough of either of those to make a confident statement about that. I have probably only heard two or three songs from each. Saturday Night Wrist is the first Deftones album I’ve owned.
Now that I’ve listened to SNW, I’d like to get a hold of those two. If I had to make a guess at this point, based on the reviews I’ve read, SNW has elements of the other two albums but is more like White Pony than Deftones. You’ll probably like five or six songs on this album, be ambivalent about two or three, and dislike the rest, if I had to guess from a very limited amount of information about your tastes.

Cool, well maybe we can arrange a little Deftones trading
There were some things I really liked about White Pony, so maybe I should give Deftones another listen. The first time I listened to it I was like “wow, all these songs sound exactly the same”, and then I realized after a while that it actually *was* the same song, and my stereo had just gotten stuck on Repeat 1 mode.

Ooops! Nice one there, Ellen!
I’m excited to give the album a listen too, Jeff — I’ve generally liked your suggestions a lot in the past, especially when it’s come to concert attending. Talking of which…. we should do a House of Blues trip again sometime soon.

Ellen - I’m definitely in for the Deftones trading. I’m anxious to hear what the other albums sound like, aside from the radio releases I’ve heard of course. And what a priceless story about the CD skipping. Now, what would have been even better is if you had then used your blog as soapbox to publicly decry how bland and repetitive the band was.
Paul - Yes, I’m definitely in for another House of Blues trip. I’ll check out who is heading their way in the near to not-so-near future, and we’ll figure something out for sure.
