Lesson Learned From September 11

April 5, 2007 – 5:48 pm

President Bush spoke to troops at Fort Irwin, California today about the Iraq war and the lesson we learned on September 11, 2001:

In other words, this is a war in which, if we were to leave before the job is done, the enemy would follow us here. That’s the lesson of September the 11th. It’s an integral part of my thinking about how to secure this country — to do the most important job that the government must do, and that is to protect the American people.

Don’t you remember the lesson we learned on September 11, 2001? Remember in the mid-90s when we invaded a sovereign nation, ousted the dictatorial head of state, and proceeded to immerse ourselves in the ensuing years long civil war? We made a mistake back then. We retreated from the civil war, and the terrorists that were feeding off the resulting chaos followed us back here and flew airplanes into two of our best known buildings.

How quickly we forget the important lessons history has taught us. Fortunately President Bush is here to jog our memory.
