Everybody makes a New Year’s resolution to do things like “get in shape” or “lose weight” and yet few if any stick this resolution.  The gyms are packed with people in January and by the end of February there are only a handful of people inside.  Why do so many people fail and how do you stick to your fitness resolutions?  Let’s have a look at how this year can be your year.

Winter Weight Gain

During the latter part of the year most Americans gain weight, we overeat during the holidays and we are getting outside less.  It is natural for our bodies to want to store fat for the winter that is how the human race survived.  Food is no longer scarce and you don’t have to let it control you.  That doesn’t mean you can’t indulge a bit during the holidays but moderation will help get through it.

Set Specific Goals

The first mistake many people make when it comes to New Year’s resolutions is setting goals that are too vague.  Losing weight is admirable, but how much weight do you want to lose?  Set a specific goal, especially when it comes to weight loss that makes it so much easier to track your progress.  Most people quit their diets or exercise regimen come January because they haven’t seen any progress, with specific goals you know exactly where you stand and what you have to change. Here is some help with that.

Find an Activity You Like

The key to sticking with an exercise program is to find one that you like and are willing to do even on bad days.  Some people prefer the calm of a yoga program and others prefer to vent their frustrations in a kick boxing program.  Both are perfectly fine, the key is finding one you like that fits your lifestyle.  I don’t particularly enjoy going to the gym and running on the treadmill, but I do love spinning classes.  Don’t be afraid to mix it up either, try out a bunch of different classes, most will offer a complementary class to get you in the door.

Resolve to work out a couple of times a week rather that just deciding to “get in shape”.  Three or four times a week is completely manageable and if working out at home suits your lifestyle better then don’t be afraid of that.  Set manageable goals for yourself and you will have no problem smashing them!

Christmas is only a few days away, that means time spent shopping for gifts, hanging out in airports to get home for the holidays and spending time with family.  While all of these things are part and parcel of the holiday season it is also the perfect opportunity to come in contact with the flu virus.  Avoiding the flu this holiday season doesn’t mean you have to hide indoors the whole time and Skype your family rather than going to see them, rather you can take a few preventative measures to ensure you stay healthy.  Let’s look at how you can avoid the flu.

Get Some Rest

Getting the right amount of sleep is vital to your immune system and we underestimate all the time how much a good night’s sleep can do to keep us healthy.  This is backed up by science.  There have been studies done that show when you get less than seven hours of sleep per night it can weaken your immune system making it easier to pick up the virus.  Christmastime is busy for many of us, there are preparations to make, and travelling and it can be exhausting.  Do yourself a favor and get some sleep, your body will thank you.

Eat Healthy

Yes, this is going to be a challenge during the holiday season.  This doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a piece of your grandma’s incredible sticky toffee pudding, it just means don’t go crazy.  Bear in mind that not eating properly not only increases your chances of getting the flu but you increase your chances of complications from the flu as well.  Berries, green vegetables and anything with lots of antioxidants should be part of your diet.

Wash Your Hands

One of the best ways to prevent the flu is to wash your hands thoroughly and often.  Most people pick up the virus from touching a surface that was contaminated by a sick person and then touching our faces.  Washing your hands can help protect you, use soap and wash thoroughly.  During the holidays we come into contact with many people and you have no idea which of them may be carrying the flu virus.  Clean hands will help keep it away.

Get Outside

If you live in the northern hemisphere you can become Vitamin D deficient during the winter.  Vitamin D is needed for our immune systems to work, and you can get Vitamin D from the sun.  Being stuck inside at work all day can reduce the levels of Vitamin D, you can take a supplement or get outside on your lunch break or on the weekends.
